Areas for development report

The Areas for development report identifies key themes or areas from the assessments that learners may have found challenging and suggestions to help support learners develop skills and understanding in these areas. There is one report for each termly assessment for each year group by subject area – Maths or Reading.

Each report is based on findings from the analysis of the standardisation sample data. Over 1000 pupils answered each question in the standardisation trial. From the analysis of the responses, we have drawn out themes based on curriculum areas for which many learners are likely to benefit from support. Each report highlights between two and five areas for development.

Often the same themes appear each term as areas that may pose challenging. We have therefore taken an overview of the findings from all assessments for an entire year and discussed each area for development in the most appropriate term’s report.  This ensures that a report for a term does not repeat information from the previous term and that over the year, all relevant challenging areas are discussed together with suggestions for developing learning.

To access the Areas for development report:

  • Select the Areas for development report icon from the report screen in NOA, there is a choice of reports from which to select.
  • Once selected the report will automatically download as a PDF file, which can then be saved or printed as required.

The reports are structured to show the curriculum area, the area for development and the discussion with possible next steps.

In the Reading reports, the first page gives a summary of the type of texts within the assessments for that term. The specific texts are not identified, since this is a broad summary, and the difficulties identified could arise from any similar texts.

For the Maths reports, example questions taken from the tests are provided to exemplify difficulties. For each area of development, one example has been chosen to illustrate the type of difficulty seen.
