Teacher scoring or verifying questions

Modified on Thu, 30 May at 10:53 AM

The majority of the questions in the tests are autoscored. These are closed response questions. For example, where learners must select one or more options from a given selection of options, such as multiple choice, or match given options, such as matching pairs.

However, there are some questions which require a level of teacher input. These are either:

  • questions that cannot be autoscored (teacher scored)
  • a small number of questions that have been autoscored but could benefit from verification of the score given (autoscored (verify)).

Where a learner has omitted to enter a response, the learner will not show for that question as no teacher input is required and no marks will be awarded automatically in autoscoring.

Questions where learners must construct their own answer need to be teacher scored as there can be many ways of answering and the mark scheme is too broad to capture by autoscoring. A small number of questions, currently only in the maths assessments, give the option for verifying the autoscored mark. These are questions where there may be a small number of alternative correct ways of answering that cannot be captured by the autoscore and it may be helpful for the teacher to check the response and use their own judgement about a learner to score.

Follow the instructions in How to access teacher marking and verification which will lead to the Score question screen for scoring or verifying a question. See Score question screen layout for information about the layout of the screen.

The example below shows a question that requires teacher scoring.

  • Under the Teacher scored section the ‘not scored’ circle will initially be selected showing no mark is awarded
  • The learner answer should be reviewed against the mark scheme, and then the appropriate mark can be selected
  • Only the marks available for the question will be shown. The example below is a 2-mark question, giving the options 0, 1, or 2.

Once a mark has been selected, the Next button will open the response for the next learner and the score will be saved. However, if a button outside of the Score question screen is selected by accident, a warning message will come up to show the learner score will not save. For example, pressing any button on the NOA menu on the left side.

Some questions have two parts, for example part (a) and part (b). In this case, both parts will display on the same Score question screen. However, if only one part is for teacher marking, only that part will show a mark scheme and provide a Teacher scored area. The autoscored question part will display for reference only showing how the learner responded and whether the response was correct.

If an autoscored (verify) question is selected from the Question selection screen, instead of a Teacher scored area on the Score question screen, there will be an Autoscored (verify) area.

  • This will show the computer marked score but will also give the other score options for that question.
  • Once the learner response has been reviewed against the mark scheme, the score may be changed according to the teacher’s judgement. In this example, the answer for part (b) is acceptable and therefore can be changed to 1.

At any point during marking, the marking progress of the selected question can be viewed by selecting the Summary button. (see Viewing the marking summary).
